ICM Signs 3ality Technica Heralding The New Age Of 3D!

In a brilliant move, International Creative Management (ICM) has signed on 3ality Technica and will represent them in the marketplace. Yes, ICM is one of the biggest talent agencies in the world so this is a big deal for both them and for 3D as an industry.

As you probably know already, ICM bundles talent (filmmakers, producers, financiers, etc) together to ignite exciting production projects. This deal will enable ICM to bring in the fine folks at 3ality Technica along with their equipment and services for 3D related needs on any of their projects during the very early stages. PERFECT for pushing the "Gold Standard" for 3D. It means 3D not only being considered at inception of projects, but actively involved in the creative process. I can't tell you how important this is.

Makes sense right? Most definitely. And with the expertise and leadership 3ality Technica has acquired in the space (THE HOBBIT, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, PROMETHEUS, etc) ICM can't go wrong by this move.

I invite you to check out a recent video clip of 3ality Technica in action via an Unwired TV segment embedded below.

As you will read in the press release, 3ality Technica owns approximately 80% of worldwide 3D production! You will also know their friendly presence on MarketSaw as well - these guys have been with me since the beginning. I still remember the first time I saw U2 3D and was floored by the beauty of its images. Truly a great company top to bottom.

Here's the official press release (Emphasis is mine):

International Creative Management (ICM), one of Hollywood’s leading talent and literary agencies, has signed 3ality Technica, the global leader in the innovation and manufacturing of stereoscopic 3D (S3D) production systems and technology. The agency will represent the company in film, television and live event production to deepen 3ality Technica’s ties in entertainment. ICM also will package the technology with the agency’s filmmakers, series creators, producers and financiers to bring 3ality Technica into projects at their creative inception.

A provider of an estimated 80% of the technology used in 3D production worldwide, 3ality Technica already has established an impressive profile within the entertainment business. Many of the most highly anticipated films of 2012 and 2013 have utilized systems created by 3ality Technica, including Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY, Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS, Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER and Sam Raimi’s OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

3ality Technica captured the attention of audiences when U2 3D previewed at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2006 to rave reviews. It marked the company’s first theatrical film, and 3ality Technica also has been at the forefront of technology in the television, music and sports industries across the globe. 3ality Technica brought the first 3D NHL game to cable home subscribers, the first IPL cricket broadcast in 3D to theaters across India, the first over-the-air terrestrial 3D broadcast State of Origin Rugby series in Australia, the first ESPN 3D broadcast, FIFA World Cup and the first fiber-optic 3D broadcast direct to U.S. home subscribers with the Patriots vs. Giants game. The company is noted for its image capture for music artists such as The Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears and Kenny Chesney.

Cameron's Next Theatrical Release Will NOT be Sci-Fi, But In Fact Science Reality! *Video Clip*

Plans have been revealed for not only a TV documentary for National Geographic, but also a 3D theatrical release about his recent voyage to the bottom of the world.

The record breaking solo dive could be in theaters later this year or early 2013.

Naturally, Cameron and his team spent a lot of time designing and fine tuning the 3D cameras used on the dive. Cameron commented on them at the recent TITANIC 3D re-release in London:

"They're a tenth of the size and weight of the 3-D camera that I used to go down to Titanic depth," Cameron said. "We spent a fair bit of the development budget of the sub figuring out how we would be lighting it and how we would do 3-D photography at full ocean depth. We did tackle a lot of challenges, but always, the thinking was this expedition is going to get paid for by a film."

The documentary will also re-create the original dive that was made by navy officer and a swiss engineer.

Looking forward to seeing history being made on the big screen. Not sci-fi, SCIENCE REALITY.

MUST WATCH: Awesome Interview With Sam Worthington And Liam Neeson For WRATH OF THE TITANS

I think this interview is exceptionally done (kudos Steve of Collider) and merits a post for MarketSaw readers to check out.

Listen to how passionate Sam Worthington is to correct the wrongs of the first movie and bring in some solid character performance for Perseus in WRATH OF THE TITANS.

As I haven't seen it yet, here is what the Collider film reviewer (Steve) had to say about the movie:
"It’s got a solid story, incredible effects, and the 3D is really well done. I’ve seen it twice (including IMAX 3D) and it’s definitely recommended."

Here are the moments & questions asked:
- Sam mentions that he watches the videoblogs on Collider and then you can see an awesome exchange between Sam and Liam.
- After mentioning how much I enjoyed the film, I ask if there were certain things they wanted to make sure happened in the sequel that might have been missed in the first film.
- With this being a sequel, how did they prepare for the roles and Sam talks about how his character has changed
- What were the most challenging action scenes to film.
- Has Liam seen a rough cut of Taken 2 yet (he hasn’t) and was the horse Sam rides the same horse from the first Clash and was it still a diva.

WRATH OF THE TITANS opens March 30.

MUST WATCH: First Trailer For Dreamworks Animation's RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

Is it just me or has Dreamworks Animation caught up with Pixar? What we are seeing with this first trailer for RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is an amazing collection of character nuances that I think is really quite inspired!

I love that Guillermo del Toro is involved too. His influence on design and story should ice this cake. And who doesn't like cake?

Here's the official movie storyline:
Rise of the Guardians, based on the forthcoming books by William Joyce, will be released on November 21, 2012. It is directed by Peter Ramsey (Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space) and co-directed by Joyce. The film is being produced by Christina Steinberg (Bee Movie, National Treasure) and Nancy Bernstein, long-time head of Production at DreamWorks Animation. Rise of the Guardians is being written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel. It stars Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. More than a collection of the well-known childhood legends, Rise of the Guardians is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes – each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

Take a look:

I think it looks marvelous. I think I might be sold already.

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS soars into theaters on November 21. Check your local listings TWICE! :-)

3D Geek Alert: Check Out A New See Through 3D Desktop From Microsoft!

Wow. These guys have come a long way and it's quite ingenious to incorporate a transparent OLED screen for this purposing. I can certainly see how this would eloquently transcribe to larger screens as well as glasses too.

What do you think? Kinda exciting to see these inventions during their infancy!

Looking forward to seeing more and more 3D technology come out of Microsoft as they realize that 3D is growing rapidly and they are heavy, HEAVY investors in R&D...

Thanks for the heads up EBostock! :-)

James Cameron Talks TITANIC 3D, AVATAR 2, PROMETHEUS And Further Conversions From His Library!

Oh man - what key questions this interviewer asked! Gotta love it. James Cameron got cornered for a few questions on the red carpet of the TITANIC 3D re-release and he had some cool things to say about the disaster movie.

Oh yeah, he mentioned a few tidbits about AVATAR 2, PROMETHEUS and whether he will be converting ALIENS, the TERMINATOR(s) and others from his awesome library. :-)

Check this out:

When this guy talks, you just kind of hang on his every word - you know what I mean? I can vouch for there being nothing yet to report on AVATAR 2 & 3 'cause my sources haven't been able to send me anything yet!

It's nice to know the AVATAR universe is next on his production plate though. More when I get it!! Thanks for the heads up EBostock!

New PROMETHEUS TV Spot *AND* Sir Ridley Scott Talks 3D!

Hey guys, check out the new TV spot for PROMETHEUS. There are a few new shots but not a whole lot more content. Still, this is PROMETHEUS so every little bit counts!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

**AND**

Total Film got a chance to ask Ridley Scott about 3D and here's his take:

How was it working in 3D?
I'm kind of naturally visual anyway, that's where I come from. And you're working off superb 3D screens, which are on the floor, and are really big. It was just wonderful. I was shooting on 3D, then seeing it on the floor. It was easy, I must say.

Do you push it in a way we haven't seen before?
Well, I mean, yeah. You only want to push it so far, before it becomes arrows popping out of the screen and stabbing you in the eye. You use it for visual effect.

Is it more immersive, giving depth?
Yes, yes. And you can do that afterwards, by the way. I'm actually decided right now how deep to make it on certain sequences. So you can literally, as it were, twiddle a knob, and the depth will increase. It's kind of bizarre, but there it is. Technologically it's absolutely staggering.

I was working with MPC in London, looking after almost 1,300 big FX shots, and every night they would pipe through shots to a big screen in my office in Lexington Street; I would sit there watching a sequence that had just been graded or refined in perfect 3D. Really amazing.

Great to here about his positive experience with 3D - it sure looks like he will be using it again in future projects! Thanks for the heads up Josh...

Watch: First Trailer For HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

I think there could be some laughs in this thing! Still I reserve judgement until I see more. The first trailer for Sony Pictures Animation's HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA reveals some of its comedic intent and I think for the most part it succeeds.

Here's the official storyline for the movie:
Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA bites into theaters September 21.

THE AVENGERS UPDATE: Behind The Scenes Pics, Video -And- The Black Widow Will Be In IRON MAN 3?

I really get into behind the scenes (BTS) movie materials and for an anticipated movie that's not released yet, the effect is compounded. THE AVENGERS is no exception to the rule. I'm sure the blu-ray featurettes are going to kick some serious butt too.

Have a look at some new BTS photos and the cool featurette discussing how all of these diverse Marvel characters who would not get along at all under normal circumstances get together.

Here's the official storyline:
Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

Word on the street is that The Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson will be back for IRON MAN 3 (May 3, 2013) which is being directed and co-written by Shane Black (gotta love the action infused in this guys blood!).

Marvel has had verbiage written into the contracts of their lead talent that has them taking ensemble, solo and supporting roles in various upcoming movies and so Marvel probably has her fulfilling one of those supporting roles in IRON MAN 3. After all, she added a good dimension in IRON MAN 2 so here's hoping for more of the same. I can see some sparks flying if Widow was to get closer to Stark at the behest of Potts.

NOTE: If you live in North Carolina you have an opportunity to become part of IRON MAN 3! Most of the supporting and day actors along with the extras, photo doubles and stand-ins will be cast in your state. You can read more details and apply through this link. Casting is through Fincannon & Associates, Wilmington, NC.

Furthermore, THOR 2 will be casting for those same supporting / BG roles in London and Los Angeles. Details on how to apply can be found here. Casting by Sarah Finn Company (in LA) and Nina Gold Casting (in London, UK).

Now, attention Mr. Black. IRON MAN 3 needs to be in stereoscopic 3D!!

UPDATED!! HE MADE IT!! James Cameron's Mariana Trench Dive Hours Away COMPLETED!!

**UPDATED, March 25: He made it!! Safe and sound. All the details here.

The time draws near!
James Cameron's dive to the deepest place on earth, the Mariana Trench, is about to take place. Cameron's team is in place and ready to dive THIS weekend if the weather conditions are fair enough.

"We did some test launches and recoveries, and we did an unpiloted dive of the vehicle," Cameron said Friday.

Earlier this week retired U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh said via email, "The sub, its team and the mother ship are all ready to go, and we only wait for the 'weather gods' to favor us."

What is really cool is just how much preparation has gone into this project. To increase the chances of seeing something very interesting, Cameron will be sending down a phone booth sized "lander" that they will be outfitting with bait.

Using sonar, "I'm going to attempt to rendezvous with that vehicle so I can observe animals that are attracted to the chemical signature of its bait," said Cameron.

He has significant enough battery power to maneuver around and explore down there somewhat too.

Here are some important facts about Cameron's brand new sub:
--The pilot is descending about 36,000 feet (10,973 meters), but his ears won’t pop during the journey; the pressure inside the pilot’s sphere stays constant.
--Crammed with equipment and just 43 inches (109 centimeters) wide, the interior of the pilot sphere is so small that the pilot will have to keep his knees bent and can barely move.
--Just like a car, the sub is equipped with “cruise control” so the pilot can hover exactly where he wants to or glide through the water at a constant speed.
--Water vapor from the pilot’s breath and sweat condenses on the cold metal sphere and drains to a space where it’s sucked into a plastic bag. In an emergency, the pilot can drink it.
--The pilot chamber is a sphere because it’s the strongest shape for resisting pressure—if the pilot sat in a cylinder, the walls would need to be three times thicker.
--The sub’s giant beam of syntactic foam shrinks about 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) under the immense water pressure at the ocean’s bottom.
--While the sub appears to be one streamlined vessel, the sphere is attached to the foam beam by polyester straps.
--If the sub’s 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) of ballast weights don’t drop when commanded, a back-up galvanic release will corrode in the seawater within a fixed period of time, freeing the sub to rise to the surface.
--Small “bladders” inside the oil-filled external battery boxes will take in seawater. These “compensation bladders,” made from medical drip bags, are a critical part of the deep-ocean electronics system because the oil compresses at depth.
--The submersible will spin slowly as it descends and ascends. It’s engineered to do this so it doesn’t veer off track.
--The sub’s batteries are made up of over a thousand pouch-type lithium-ion cells, bigger versions of the batteries hobbyists use for model airplanes.
--More than 180 systems—from battery packs to sonar—will be operating during the dive.
--Every circuit board in the sub’s exterior electronics—over 1,500 of them—was designed and built specially for this vehicle.
--The sub’s four external cameras are a tenth the size of previous deep-ocean HD cameras. The housings were designed by the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE team, and the cameras themselves were created from scratch, from the sensor up.

Check out this video clip showing key depths along the way down for the Cameron Challenger Depth Dive:

Yes, the sub has been down there and back already! Unmanned of course. So it's good news the integrity of the craft is up to the challenge. What I find so interesting about this dive is the sheer number of redundancies that Cameron has placed in the sub. For example, when they test dove to 8000 meters, he lost a thruster on his trip back up to the surface. Trouble? Nope. He has ELEVEN others to rely upon. They worked. The question is, has he thought of everything that can go wrong? Let's hope so!

More info after the dive!! This is Cameron at his best.

James Cameron Hands THE DIVE To Martin Campbell

I'm disappointed that James Cameron won't be able to make one of his passions in the story about the true love tragedy of free divers Audrey Mestre and Francisco "Pippin" Ferraras. Looks like he has handed over the ballast to Martin Campbell (GREEN LANTERN, CASINO ROYALE).

Clearly Cameron is totally swamped right now with his scientific Mariana Trench dive and the pending mega productions of AVATAR 2 and 3.

Apparently the writing duties have also been handed over to J. Michael Straczynski (CHANGLING) who will co-write with Campbell. Cameron had Laeta Kalogridis write the first go at it.

MUST WATCH: New Creature Featurette For WRATH OF THE TITANS - CHIMERA!!

Ok. This is darn good folks. The Kraken from CLASH was one thing, but this thing from WRATH OF THE TITANS looks off the chain menacing. And this is not the big boss of the film either!

Such imagination goes into creating these creatures - really I'm amazed. One head of the creature spews a fuel and the other head ignites it? A serpent's head on the tip of its tail? INSPIRED!!

Awesome job from what I can see on the visual effects. I hope the 3D conversion is correctly applied to max out this complete experience. If the whole thing pulls together we are in for a treat.

Here's the storyline:

Secondly, take a look at Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof taking questions from the online community as well as a local live audience yesterday. They are introduced by my good nuddy George Roush of AMC. Ridley specifically talks about why he used 3D (click ahead to 7:30 to see this portion) and that "it works like a son of a bitch"!

This is a heads up for all your filmmakers out there that are on the edge of joining the 3D revolution but haven't yet stepped up - it really isn't that challenging if you are passionate about what you are doing in life. It's just another tool in the box, but it just so happens it's a tool that will make your films BETTER. And I agree 100% with that statement. No matter what the genre is, we naturally see in 3D. And 3D movies is a reminder to that - it will bring your audiences into your transportive story.

And remember guys, PROMETHEUS was shot and edited in S3D - so all these visuals we have been feasting our eyes on this weekend are going to be even better in 3D! We're going to BE THERE. I can't believe that this is in our near future but it is!!

And a special bonus! Check out the viral video from Weyland Industries revealing Michael Fassbender as an Android!! VERY cool:

Can't wait for June 8!

ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH: The New PROMETHEUS Trailer Drops And It. Is. WONDROUS.

After all the waiting for this trailer surely we were being set up for disappointment! Are you kidding me? This is Ridley Scott in his wheelhouse!!

The new full PROMETHEUS trailer is wondrous. It represents humanity and its rapid ascension to levels of technology that perhaps we are not ready for yet. We go too far. Overstep our bounds.

But it is all within reason. It is BELIEVABLE. That's what makes Ridley Scott sci-fi thrillers so exciting to behold: We enter his universe. Almost as if our own lives are what becomes unbelievable while we watch events unfold. So much so we don't want to leave his movies; or as in many scenes in his movies, we WISH we could, but we don't want to. AMAZING.

I'll expand more on that line of thinking when I review the actual feature length PROMETHEUS. I think you get my drift though.

Be sure to select HD!

It's moments like this: Like PROMETHEUS - Like AVATAR - Like THE HOBBIT - Like THE AVENGERS - Like THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN - that doing what I do is all worthwhile. Bravo Ridley. I was transported during that trailer, let alone your upcoming masterpiece.

3D In The Classroom! How 3D Can Improve Education Through Engagement

I received today an enlightening email from Donald Brittain who is the CEO of Instant Effects. They specialize in 3D products and services but also have a solution for 3D education. I have long held that 3D in the classroom would capture the attention of students in a much more meaningful way than other types of media. With Brittain's team focusing on interactive models of such things as a human head / skull / muscles / brain, etc I can see how they are on to something. 3D isn't just about entertainment!

Take a look at the video clip at the end of this post for more info.

Here's what he had to say:
This short demo video shows how we have optimized our 3D content and interaction methods for classroom use. Through market validation, we found that teachers want “virtual models” that they can interact with and use as a teaching aid. This works better than traditional physical models since they tend to be small, hard to see in detail, and don’t offer the ability to animate to show internal workings and dynamic processes. Other software and media vendors have concentrated on producing either linear media (movies – very passive) or lessons optimized for one-on-one learning (useless in a classroom setting).

We are currently rolling out this education initiative in the UK through a JV with White Space Productions. The JV is called “3D Hub” – see www.3d-hub.co.uk

After this is up and running smoothly, we intend to partner with other companies to address the US and Asian markets, and to broaden our approach to include additional forms of interactive learning and presentation.

In addition to the advantages of using 3D media touted by TI (see, for example, http://www.dlp.com/projector/markets/education/teacher.aspx), our approach also allows:
- Uniformity of curriculum material and presentation method (by using the same virtual models throughout a state/region/country)

- Ability to quickly update material throughout all schools (since all assets are digital, as opposed to physical models and books, etc)

- Lower upfront and ongoing costs (start with 2D projection of the 3D models, phase in stereo 3D when budgets allow)

- Higher level of engagement (interactive media is substantially more attractive to students than static pictures or passive movies, and stereo 3D enhances this)

Check out the video:

What do you think? I know I would have soaked this stuff up as a child in school! All the power to these guys. Hope it's successful and you can bring it across the pond too.

JURASSIC PARK Celebrates It's 20th Anniversary With A 3D Theatrical Release!! **AND What Classics Would You Like To See In 3D?

Yes! We all knew it was coming but it sure is nice to get a date set early enough to plan around it and I bet most of us want to see JURASSIC PARK again in the cinema in glorious 3D!

Steven Spielberg has probably set the bar better darn high with this conversion and when I learn more about who is doing the work and their process I will let you know.

Universal has set JURASSIC PARK's release date for July 19, 2013.

3D conversion is becoming more and more prevalent these days and with STAR WARS, TITANIC and now JURASSIC PARK with confirmed returns, we're just getting started.

Many of you have spoken up here on MarketSaw about exactly what films you would like to see converted to stereoscopic 3D on different threads - so let's make this comment thread about JURASSIC PARK but also what other classic films you would like to see in 3D. THE MATRIX? JAWS? SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT :-) ? You decide! I will then take the top answers and create a poll for everyone to gain some kind of consensus. I'll post the results for the studios to see - perhaps we can sway some thought on the matter! Ante up guys and gals!

Awesome 3D Poster For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!!

It's too much for words!! Just kinda sit back and watch it for awhile...

The webslinger is looking good! And yes, I love that Peter Parker invented the webslinging himself and it didn't come to him biologically. That's some spidey canon stuff there my friends!

Can't wait for July 3!! Note that I am not totally convinced this is official marketing from Marvel.

MUST SEE: New Japanese Trailer For THE AVENGERS!

Yes - you did see correctly last night that I twittered and facebooked the link to Yahoo to watch this trailer! I was just simply too tired to post it then and was literally on my way the bed when the comment came in on this. I definitely wanted my social media friends to see it fast though. Thanks to EBostock for the heads up about 18 hours ago!

Anyway, this thing is ultra hot. Some new scenes AND "vehicles" to name a couple things - I don't want to give it away though. Just watch it, you'll be glad you did.

I saw the North American version of this trailer preroll in front of JOHN CARTER in IMAX 3D and It. Was. Glorious. The conversion looks to be better than THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA to my eyes, but then again they have had lots of time to perfect these relatively short clips. To early to say about the whole movie of course, but the trailer looks stunning in IMAX 3D.

The Japanese version though is definitely superior. Here you go!

SOOOOOOO. Are you on board May 4 or what? :-)
