COWBOYS AND ALIENS Feeling Blue This Weekend? THE SMURFS Are Neck And Neck!

Well THE SMURFS is a 3D movie so obviously COWBOYS AND ALIENS are a bit handcuffed for winning the box office weekend, but still it is a closer race than I thought would happen.

Both movies are clocking in at $36.2 million, this despite pre-estimates that the western sci-fi mashup would easily win the duel (some pegged them making $45-50m!). They thought that THE SMURFS (estimated at $20m) would be great counter programming. In the end it seems THE SMURFS can be vicious and carnivorous.

THE SMURFS actually smurfed everyone and came out on top for Friday with and estimated $13.4m to COWBOYS AND ALIENS $13m. Kinda stunning.

Personally I thought the marketing for COWBOYS AND ALIENS sucked badly. Folks didn't really know what to expect and that my friends is dangerous. Even Harrison Ford's "Give him to me now, or I'll take him" lacked punch in the trailer. Perhaps Favreau was too intimidated by Ford to push him. Yeah I know, I would be intimidated too when you have to direct Hans Solo, Indiana Jones and the President all rolled into one. I have yet to see it (going VERY soon) but I have my reservations. Plus the fact it SHOULD have been a 3D movie. Favreau just doesn't get that yet. Maybe that's another reason why he backed out of IRON MAN 3 and had no interest in directing THE AVENGERS (though he is Executive Producing).

Now THE SMURFS have hit everything bang on, right from it's cookie cutter, sure-fire family marketing, to an excellent voice cast, to enlisting the talents of Rob Engle (3D Visual Effects Supervisor) and his team at Sony. I'm trying to tee up a conversation with Rob very soon - it's been hard as we just moved yesterday and our lives may be in a new house, but still very much in boxes. Posting this from Starbucks!

So really, why SHOULD I be surprised with this round of box office? Or any of us? :-)

MUST SEE: Teaser For THE AVENGERS!!

If you haven't seen CAPTAIN AMERICA yet (hey - get on that!), then you have probably not seen the teaser that is being presented after the movie in theaters for THE AVENGERS. That alone is worth at least $10 to me :-)

Now this clip is NOT the full version, rather it is a teaser-of-the-teaser. Again, for the full meal deal you have to see it after CAPTAIN AMERICA.

That being said, the clip will certainly give you a taste of what is to come with THE AVENGERS and believe you me, this is the event movie of 2012. Forget THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (ok, don't forget it, but it's going to be a heckuva summer).

The scenes with Chris Evans are when he is suddenly awaken to find himself in modern day NYC! There is PLENTY more in the theatrical teaser.

So what do you think? Have you seen the teaser in theaters?

New Trailer For HAPPY FEET 2

Obviously this is a family film but hey - I still loved the first one. I was interested all the way through and the music was amazing. I expect more of the same with the sequel and the trailer certainly keeps me walking that road.

Elijah Wood, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Hugo Weaving lead the voice cast with George Miller (LORENZO'S OIL, MAD MAX, BABE) directing.

The penguins slide into theaters November 18! Bring kids - lots of kids!

FIRST LOOK: New BATTLESHIP Trailer!

We all knew it was coming - A Peter Berg directed take on the game BATTLESHIP. But will it be any good?

From the first look at the trailer it seems somewhat compelling in that Liam Neeson seems to be on his game. The effects look half decent and judging by the content seen it seems the 3D should be good. I won't give away everything in the trailer until you see it, but it could deliver a great popcorn movie.

Here's the storyline:
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Check out the very high altitude shots of the vessels on the ocean - JUST like in the game. I think I can guess that somehow these alien ships can camo themselves VERY well which would require the navy to guess locations and shell those spots liberally - hoping to score a hit. That is just a guess though - but it seems reasonable given what I just saw.

Here's hoping for a great ride! BATTLESHIP weighs anchor on May 18, 2012.

THE GREAT GATSBY To Be Shot In 5K With RED Epic's And 3ality Digital Rigs DEFINITELY In Native 3D!

Here's final confirmation that Baz Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY will be shot in 3D.

Moreover, cinematographer Simon Duggan is shooting it in an astounding 5K resolution with the RED Epic cameras using 3ality Digital rigs! Panavision is providing those camera / rig setups. Apparently Duggan and Luhrmann completed tests last month in NYC and were "very happy" with the results.

“It’s not that much bigger than a standard film camera,” Duggan said, adding that the EPIC also allows shooting hand-held or with a Steadicam.

Shooting starts in August next month in Australia and wraps in December.

The movie is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

How about Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) and Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan) for the core cast?

Love it! I saw Edgerton in WARRIOR at CinemaCon this year and let me tell you that he and Tom Hardy NAILED it!! Keep your eyes open for that one (opening September 9), even if it is only in 2D :-)

Apparently Alex Proyas PARADISE LOST will be taking up a sound stage during that shooting window as well, sharing space with Luhrmann at Fox Studios Australia.

Of course this isn't the first major movie to be shot with the tandem of RED Epics and 3ality Digital rigs - THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and the two HOBBIT movies are also utilizing the setup. More when I get it!!

Thanks for the heads up on this Mark!

Check Out The New DREDD Photos!!

We have more DREDD shots to show you, this time showing off Karl Urban's frown, Olivia Thirlby in action and the suits of the Judges.

Is it just me or is that frown on Urban look quite forced? I don't know how I feel about that yet. I have to see his character is action first and Urban is definitely a fine action actor. We all know Dredd frowns a LOT from the comic books, but I have to say at this point I have mixed feelings about how it looks on Urban.

It would certainly be intimidating to have a guy walk up to you with the full power of the law to be judge, jury and executioner! Can Urban pull it off? In the end, I think so.

The suits look much more utilitarian and realistic than Stallone's over the top plastic looking tinsel. So kudos to Michael O'Connor (THE DUCHESS) who designed these new ones.

Here's the movie's storyline:
DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

DREDD sentences us all on September 21, 2012! I really want this thing to work as I really enjoy the character a great deal. I have always been an Urban fan too. I want sequels. I want GOOD sequels.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST PLACE AVENGER! **AND** A New Assembled AVENGERS Poster!!

Harry Potter and company could not hold Marvel's latest Avenger from capping a solid weekend and first place at the box office! In fact, CAPTAIN AMERICA is having the best weekend yet for a superhero this summer with an estimated $65.8m take. HP took in a respectable $48.1m.

However THOR may have something to say about Cap taking first as it took in $65.7m! One would have to look at those tight numbers and think that is a very respectable neighborhood to be in for future releases of first time properties. Of course the expectation is that THE AVENGERS will easily top those figures next year. Marvel seems to have captured the imaginations of the audience with their stock of heroes as opposed to DC whose GREEN LANTERN did not perform to expectation. That being said, who would deny the upcoming THE DARK KNIGHT RISES it's day? No one. I do think Warner Bros. needs to pay attention to what Marvel is doing though - it's working.

I was on record as saying CAPTAIN AMERICA was my choice this summer as the best. Well after seeing it I was not disappointed! But I will say this, I was more surprised with the craftsmanship of THOR than I was of the assumed performance of Cap. These two properties are neck and neck in my books.

The 3D was comparable to the Norse God epic (though I enjoyed THOR's 3D slightly more). Certainly nothing overtly wrong with the stereo. Cap's 3D was tastefully done to the point where you forgot it was there in many cases, but then the audience was reminded during one particular seen involving the shield. Won't tell you when - but when it happens you will know!

In other words, SEE THIS MOVIE! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Suspension of disbelief was at times hard to secure with those huge advancements in HYDRA technology - and even the US technology. This was set during the 1940's so I was having a hard time with it, but the feelings only lasted moments and then we were back into fight scenes and interesting character dynamics. Definitely worth the money to see this in 3D!

MUST SEE: Amazing TINTIN Standee From Europe!

I haven't seen any of these over on this side of the pond yet - have you? Check out these awesome standees for TINTIN from Europe, sent to me by F, an awesome MarketSaw reader.

Clearly Weta has nailed the uncanny valley - those eyes are just about perfect. Blend in cartoon-like figures yet actual skin pores and bloodshot eyes and we are in the adventure business!

I love the 3D is sweeping the world and that there is an absolutely HUGE market overseas for everything Hollywood produces. TINTIN is one of those worldwide properties that you KNOW will enjoy stunning box office in Europe. It may surprise a few folks and indeed may lead to more European properties being developed by the studios.

Anyway, it looks like we can't go wrong with this one. Spielberg and Jackson looked to have nailed it. With Spielberg's track record one can be assured that the story and adventure will be grand indeed.

More when I get it! THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN hits theaters in Europe starting October 26 (Belgium, Switzerland, France, Netherlands and the UK) and in the US and Canada on December 23.

SEE: New UNDERWORLD 4 Poster... And Why I Am Excited About This Film!!

At last we see some tease for the upcoming UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING that will be biting into theaters January 20, 2012. I believe this is from Comic-Con and I grabbed it from Kellvin Chavez's Facebook stream.

I am extremely excited about this film. As you may have heard, Sony / Screen Gems invited me out to Vancouver for a few days to visit the set and it was a blast! Loved every moment of it. I can't talk about anything yet, but I will have indepth interviews with many of the team in the coming months once I get the oks. They gave me unprecedented access to previz and of course the set and I walked away with my jaw on the floor.

My jaw was dragging for a number of reasons - I can say it was a pleasure to see the RED Epics at work in stereoscopic 3D config! There are other technical details I can't divulge yet, but it amazed me. Sincerely. Can't wait for the results!

Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein are co-directing and those two were remarkable to watch in action. It marks the first time I have watched those important duties being shared and they obviously are a well oiled machine.

Anyway, the poster looks great! Kate Beckinsale clearly carries the movie, but her supporting cast is VERY strong. More when I am cleared to tell you!!

Ridley Scott Will NEVER Work Without 3D Again!! Video Added!

Ahhhh. Music to my ears! I love it when more and more creative geniuses at the top of their game commit to 3D like Ridley Scott just did at Comic-Con. Here's the updates...

Says Scott: "3D has been a wonderful exercise but I was brought up as a camera operator so its really about lensing and all that kind of stuff. So with the help I’ve had from a wonderful cameraman and his technical team its been, for me, a pretty straight forward ride. That said I’ll never work without 3D again, even for small dialogue scenes. I love the whole process. 3D opens up the universe of even a small dialogue scene so I’ve been very impressed with that."

Says PROMETHEUS writer Damon Lindelof: "When Ridley decided to film in 3D, he understood [lighting] was going to be one of the profound challenges and I think one of the things that was important to him was, in terms of the constructions of the sets, that the movie was shot on sound stages in Pinewood. Just these humongous, expansive sets. Everything is built. If you’re building a ship, he just built the ship…..I’ve never been on the set of a movie that’s actually shooting 3D before. Anytime you walk into video village there are essentially five massive video screens. You walk in, get a pair of glasses and you can see the shot and suddenly you understood, even on the production design level – the movie was designed by this guy Arthur Max who did Fight Club – ‘Oh my god, they actually designed this movie for 3D.’ Ridley is a shot maker. He makes beautiful art. So the idea of going in post and putting things in there digitally is not going to happen in this movie. Therefore, I feel any movie that’s going to be in 3D has to answer the question, ‘Can you justify this being in 3D? Why should it be in 3D?’ I think the answer to that question for Prometheus is it creates a very immersive environment. The idea that you’re in sometimes very confined spaces, sometimes very wide open spaces. But the only way to trick your brain into feeling you’re in the movie, going through these experiences with these characters, is that the 3D helps bring you into that immersive environment and just based on what i've seen so far I think probably one the most visionary and visual directors in the world is finally using this medium, I think its going to be pretty special."

Lindelof continues: "And by calling it Prometheus were certainly not doing anybody any favors by just saying like ‘This thing is called Batman. It’s gonna be about Batman.’ It’s a slightly headier, we sort of joke about it, pretentious title. So we understand that the bar is very high. But I think that for Ridley to be coming back to this genre, for him to be directing a movie in 3D for the first time – he’s shooting it in 3D, it’s not a conversion – just the way that it’s gonna look and the way it’s gonna feel has to be special and part of the game is being a little bit secretive about it. And I like to keep secrets."

I think PROMETHEUS and the native 3D footage begin shot is in pretty safe hands, don't you? Looking forward to seeing what Scott does AFTER this little SciFi adventure is released - 'cause we now know it will be in stereoscopic 3D!

DREDD Update: Release Date Set And A New Pic Of Karl Urban As Judge Dredd!

Here's an official image of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in the Lionsgate reboot of old Stallone SciFier. Though it is much clearer than previous looks at Karl as Dredd, it is extremely dark - and it must be by design. I actually like the November photo much better, though the resolution is off. If you want a closer look at the helmet itself (as Urban will NOT be taking it off for the movie), click here.

I have always loved the premise for Judge Dredd from day one, but Stallone's take on it was not up to par for me. Really hoping for something special here with Urban and his director Pete Travis (Vantage Point). The closer to the original comic, the better.

Here's the storyline:

DREDD is slated for release on September 21, 2012. For all of our DREDD coverage, click here.

MUST SEE: First Look At Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS!!

Here's your first look at one of the most anticipated movies of the decade, Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS!

Definitely in space isn't it? Wagers on who this actor is and what it is he/she is carrying?

Certainly looks ALIEN-esque! Right colors. Helmet seems about right when you think back to the original movie. I want MORE!!

MUST WATCH: Update From Middle-earth, Part 3 Of Peter Jackson's Set Videos!!

This is brilliant, Brilliant, BRILLIANT marketing!!! Peter Jackson has nailed this thing down to a science and I so adore these behind the scenes looks at the making of THE HOBBIT.

The brilliant thing about it is it doesn't seem like marketing at all. It is what we have all been waiting for.

Can you see how much fun these guys are having? What a feeling it must be to KNOW you are working on surefire, massive worldwide blockbusters. Surely there is some tension and pressure to create this huge responsibility, no? If there is, they are not showing it!

Man I wish I was even a grip on these projects! There are so "precious" few movies that I would say that about. Anyway, I am going on and on about the clip so I will leave it up to you to decide what you think!

ENJOY!! Click here to watch. I will post the clip when it is freely available.

Whallopin' Websnappers! THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Trailer Drops!!

It's here! Finally we see the new trailer for Sony's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in a half decent resolution!!

The geekiness of Peter Parker shines through here and obviously the first person view is meant to rile up the inner geek in all of us to jump up and throw a fist in the air.

You can start to see all the stunt work that was done for this movie as Marc Webb elected to use as much realism as possible rather than having a CG webslinger flying about.

Says Webb: One of the things we tried to do was keep the stunts more grounded physically and that was a huge challenge because you have a character whose abilities are superhuman. How do you do that in a way that’s convincing and real? We spent months and months and months developing rigs so he could swing in a way that wasn’t computer-generated. Obviously there’s going to be enhancements and CG (sequences), but it’s based in a physical reality and that’s a new technique (for this film brand).

So hang on and have a look! THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens July 3, 2012...

MUST WATCH: New CONAN THE BARBARIAN Teaser Clip Hits!

And HITS HARD! I love it!! And Jason Momoa is not even in this clip. I won't spoil it for you, but suffice to say character background is being aptly looked after!

Here's the storyline if you haven't seen it yet:
"I live. I love. I slay...I am content." - Conan The Barbarian The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this Summer. Gotta love Ron Perlman is this! Well, ANY movie he is in. CONAN hits us August 19.

HARRY POTTER 7.2 Sets Massive New Opening Weekend Records! With Good Reason - It's VERY Good!

I have always enjoyed the Harry Potter franchise since day one. But something was missing for me and I couldn't put my finger on it. Suddenly it all comes home for me while watching HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS Pt. 2 with my daughter in IMAX 3D... connecting the dots.

I found that the earlier iterations of the immense money maker for Warner Bros. lacked some continuity for me. Furthermore, I didn't fully understand how Harry felt about his parents not being around. And lastly, though time was passing throughout the movie releases, I didn't capture how time was affecting these kids. One movie blurred into the next. Perhaps it would have helped to have watched a few one right after the other, but I don't have the time to do that very often.

But HARRY POTTER 7.2 grabs it all. ALL OF IT. And presents it to you in a most electrifying way. The ending is truly amazing for me. Teens will probably not fully appreciate the final scenes as much as the older crowd would, but it is all perfectly blended for the PG-13 audience. If you liked the ending for something like TOY STORY 3, then you'll like this ending too. Warmed my heart, it did!

The 3D conversion was adequate. Not exceptional like THOR (or how CAPTAIN AMERICA seems to be), but ample. There were some minor distracting problems with the 3D, but overall the average moviegoer will not notice. It is DEFINITELY worth seeing this thing in IMAX 3D let me tell you. It's not a TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON 3D experience but it is definitely the way to see it.

One thing is certain, part 2 of THE DEATHLY HALLOWS is much better than part 1. If you have seen any of the previous movies, then I fully recommend seeing this finale. If you have seen ALL of the other movies then I know there will be nothing stopping you from completing the journey, because this is the best of the lot.

And the world agrees! Actual numbers are now in and HP7.2 made $169.19 million domestically this weekend (better than the estimate of $168.55m!). That is the ALL TIME RECORD. THE DARK KNIGHT now stands second with $158m. Of course it set the opening day record as well with $91.1m - that helps!

But get this: HP7.2 raked in $481.5m worldwide!! Domestically 3D accounted for 43% of the gross which to me is about right considering the marketing for HP7.2 was not all that 3D intensive compared to something like TRANSFORMERS 3. I am steadfast in my thinking that if you are running a successful franchise in 2D and this is your first run at a 3D movie for it, you had better market it to the nth degree or you will not get full performance. If folks are used to seeing something in 2D like Potter, they will probably see the last one the same way - UNLESS you make it abundantly clear that you will be missing something if it is not seen in 3D. Michael Bay and Paramount did a wonderful job with TF3. Warner's did not push this nearly as much. But I am certainly happy with 43% domestically. Don't forget the majority of box office revenue is no longer domestic, but in most cases overwhelmingly overseas. And 3D is riding 60%+ there consistently.

My last word is you have to see this movie. IMAX 3D is best. I can finally without reservation recommend a Potter film!! SEE IT!

THORIN! Need I say more??

Thorin Oakenshield's character poster from THE HOBBIT is finally here and it is suitably impressive!

Here's the official description of the photo:
As a young Dwarf prince, Thorin witnessed the destruction and terror wrought when a great fire-breathing Dragon attacked the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. After slaughtering many of Thorin’s kin, the great serpent, Smaug, entered The Lonely Mountain and took possession of its vast store of gold and jewels. No-one came to the aid of the surviving Dwarves, and thus, a once proud and noble race was forced into exile. Through long years of hardship, Thorin grew to be a strong and fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart a fierce desire grew; a desire to reclaim his homeland and destroy the beast that had brought such misery upon his people. So when fate offers him an unusual ally, he seizes the chance for revenge.

Thanks to TheOneRing.net for not making the watermarks too overwhelming!

MUST SEE: HOBBIT Characters Photo #5 - Balin And Dwalin

Winding up this week's batting order for THE HOBBIT character posters we have Balin (played by Ken Stott) and Dwalin (Graham McTavish) with some serious countenances - AND sporting magnificent beards. Balin in particular is basking in splendidness with his curled toe boots!

Here's the photo description from TIME:
Dwarf Lords in their own right, Balin and Dwalin are close relatives of Thorin. Beyond this, these brothers are two of his most loyal and trusted friends. An old warrior, Balin has lived through hard times and fought many battles, yet he harbors doubts about the wisdom of the Quest to retake the Lonely Mountain. Dwalin has no such forebodings – his belief in Thorin’s leadership is unshakeable. A powerful and bruising fighter, with a natural tendency to distrust anyone who is not a Dwarf, particularly anyone who might be an Elf, Dwalin is not someone to cross lightly.

We need to see some Thorin! Bring on the next round!! :-) Lately I've taken up LOTRO for some leisure fun and I am impressed by what they give you for free these days...

MUST WATCH: Martin Scorsese's HUGO Trailer!!

Finally! And boy does it seem worth the wait. A 3D masterpiece from one of the master himself, Martin Scorsese. HUGO seems to jump off the screen at you in 2D, let alone the full 3D experience we will all encounter on November 23.

Apple also has an HD version if you so prefer.

Here is the official movie storyline:
Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key. Based on Brian Selznick’s award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, this magical tale is Academy Award (R) winner Martin Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D.

The cinematography is impeccable. The colors are so sublime. The characters seem rich and about to clash in so many ways that the mind races! Can't wait to see more of this.

Not only is HUGO (Formerly HUGO CABRET) Scorseses's first 3D film, it is also his first family film. Scorsese shot it in wonderous native 3D using the Cameron - Pace Group's Fusion Camera rigs with ARRI Digital's Alexa cameras.

It looks perfectly cast don't you think? The opening shots of Paris are jaw dropping too. I have to tip my hat to Scorsese - looks like he's done it again... More when I get it!!

MUST WATCH: New JOHN CARTER Trailer!

Yes! I was so perplexed about how they were going to tackle JOHN CARTER because of all the original content challenges but now after seeing this many of my concerns have be erased.

I simply love the feel of this trailer. I don't know if they will be using any of that music in the movie but it fits too. Nice job.

Here's the movie's storyline:
From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

And Taylor Kitsch looks at home with this vehicle. I want to see him in more action but that's coming I am sure!

I do get a slight AVATAR feeling from some scenes - don't you? Hard to not be influenced by that movie with this subject matter to begin with. I am sure Stanton will bring it home.

MUST SEE: HOBBIT Characters Photo #4 - Bofur, Bombur And Bifur

NOW we're getting to the meat of the order!! Bofur (James Nesbitt), Bombur (Stephen Hunter) and Bifur (William Kircher) grace our presence now with their own brand of character poster. Love this one! Bofur's weapon of choice looks fairly similar to a... ladle. Do you think he partakes in the odd THIRD breakfast?

And Bombur looks like he is posing for a firemen's calendar! :-)

Again, no need for a link to the originating site as they made it CLEAR where it originated.

Here's the accompanying description:
While most of the Company of Thorin Oakensheild is related to the royal and noble line of Durin, Bofur, his brother Bombur and their cousin Bifur most definitely are … not. Born and bred in the West, descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free.

Clearly Warner Bros. is releasing these photos as a fan courtesy during the production's first vacation break. Brilliant idea really. Keeps us all very interested and dutifully top of mind even though THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is upon us on December 14, 2012. A year later we will be enjoying THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN, December 13, 2013.

Bring on more!!

PassmoreLab Teams with LINKIN PARK And Warner Bros. Records For 3D Music Video "Iridescent"

Linkin Parkʼs music video for the song, Iridescent (the end track from Paramount Pictures blockbuster, Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is now available in 3D and will screen at select theaters worldwide.

PassmoreLab, the San Diego based 3D production and 3D post house, has again teamed up with Grammy-Award winning, Linkin Park and Warner Bros. Records, to announce the release of the bandʼs latest music video, Iridescent in stereoscopic 3D. The song plays during the end credits of the number one box office film, 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon.' The 3D music video will play in select independent theaters worldwide at the end of the movie.

The video for Iridescent is abstract, shot in black, white and grey tones and intercut with images of snakes, bulldogs, futuristic architecture, bionic entities and Transformer robots (which provide the only brief flashes of color).

The video is all part of director (and Linkin Park turntablist) Joe Hahnʼs vision. “It explores how human existence might be affected by the elements of Transformers robots, and the threat of the Decepticons," said Hahn. "What would it be like to be citizens in a decaying universe? I tried a lot of new things, and we had fun shooting it."

This is the second time Linkin Park has worked with PassmoreLab for 3D production. Last year, PassmoreLab added the 3D post production to the bandʼs video for the number one single, ʻWaiting for the End.ʻ The video, touted as a “montage of melodic emotion,” received critical acclaim and earned Linkin Park and PassmoreLab numerous awards and praise at 3D film festivals worldwide.

PassmoreLab provides stereoscopic 3D production and post-production services using a combination of traditional approaches and proprietary tools. “We had a very tight schedule to complete all the 3D elements of Iridescent in time for the Transformers 3 premiere. Throughout the 3D production process, we worked very closely with the band's digital post-house Ghost Town Media in Los Angeles to stay true to the director's vision for the video. Without a high level of communication and efficient workflow between everyone involved with this project, it would not have been completed on time. The collaborative end result is truly a beautiful and dramatic use of 3D. Hahnʼs post-apocalyptic vision and our 3D mesh wonderfully,” said Greg Passmore CEO of PassmoreLab.

Iridescent provides a unique blend of gritty, desaturated stylization and iconic imagery that is greatly enhanced after conversion to 3D.

With the recent influx of 3D screening platforms -- theaters, television, mobile devices -- PassmoreLab has emerged as an industry leader in the 3D rock music video realm. “Our proprietary 3D techniques and alternative style has become a sought after commodity in the music industry,” said James Humann, Executive Producer with PassmoreLab, “We feel that ʻIridescent 3Dʼ is a game changer for the music video business and weʼre looking forward to continuing to work with bands and artists to produce and distribute videos and live performances through the latest 3D delivery platforms.”

Both Iridescent and Waiting for the End, in 3D, are available for distribution through PassmoreLab on multiple platforms including mobile devices, video on demand, television broadcast and theatrical.

Alama Drafthouse Cinema At Westlakes Expands Digital Roll-out In San Antonio, Texas

Conversion of all 9 screens for a State-of-the-Art Facility to Enhance Every Aspect of the Movie-Going Experience

San Antonio, Texas, July 12, 2011 -- Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas San Antonio is unveiling their digital conversion when it premieres of one of this summer’s most anticipated 3D blockbusters, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” as part of the movie’s nationwide release. The latest installment of the successful movie franchise opens with a midnight screening on July 14, and the innovative exhibitor is celebrating the event with a Harry Potter marathon, showing the previous seven films starting at 6am and leading right up to the premiere of the new movie at midnight.

This digital upgrade at the Alamo franchise location in San Antonio continues the exhibitor’s emphasis on providing a range of amenities such as award winning food, extensive beer selection and world renowned pre-show programming. It will also feature cutting edge technology including Sony’s 4K digital cinema projection technology on each of its nine screens, the first theater in San Antonio to do so.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas is well-known for its inventive alternative content events and rare film programming as well as showcasing first run films. Its latest efforts with the Harry Potter movies is just one more example of how digital technology can broaden a theater’s range of programming options and deliver a unique out-of-home entertainment experience for consumers.

Liz Burt, Director of Sales and Marketing for the San Antonio market, says “We are excited to launch the best film presentation our industry has to offer. We know our loyal customer base will love the advancements that have been made.”

“Sony’s unique 4K technology is an example of how digital technology is allowing exhibitors more flexibility in promoting movies, like the Harry Potter franchise,” said Andrew Stucker, National Account Manager for Sony’s Digital Cinema Solutions Group. “Movie goers will have every detail brought to life as part of an extremely vivid and immersive entertainment experience.”

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is dinner, drinks, movies and events, all under one roof. Brand expansion has been a key growth strategy for Alamo Drafthouse Cinema since Brandon Arceneaux and Chris Hoegemeyer brought the concept to San Antonio in 2004. Opening the Westlakes 9 screen location first, the company has grown to three theatres in San Antonio, the most recent opening in Stone Oak this past November.

“We could not be happier with how well the San Antonio community has embraced Alamo Drafthouse, and what our concept has to offer,” says co-owner Brandon Arceneaux.

Poster Photo: Scorsese's HUGO!

Here's something else we can chew on a little bit for Martin Scorsese's HUGO!

Obviously a photo taken somewhere out in the wild of the upcoming release's poster. Even though the photo is effectively ruined for me with that freakin' watermark - it saves me the trouble of linking to the photo.

Here's a brief storyline:
Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D, tells the tale of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a 1930s Paris train station. When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl, and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop, he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.

More when I get it! This movie is a must see in my books.

MUST SEE: HOBBIT Characters Photo #3 - Fili And Kili

It seems that not all dwarves in THE HOBBIT will be burly boxes of beard and braun! Fili and Kili seem much more toned back (with just cause - they are the youngest of the lot) and certainly it looks like Fili is going to get into some mischief don't you think?

These two dwarves are the nephews of Thorin and both play the fiddle at "The Unexpected Party" at Bilbos home. Ok, hope that isn't a massive spoiler for you! Jackson may not be including that anyway, but it helps fills in just how these characters will play in THE HOBBIT.

Here's the description that accompanies the photo (MSN):
Two of the youngest Dwarves, Fili and Kili have been born into the royal line of Durin and raised under the stern guardianship of their uncle, Thorin Oakensheild. Neither has ever travelled far, nor ever seen the fabled Dwarf City of Erebor. For both, the journey to the Lonely Mountain represents adventure and excitement. Skilled fighters, both brothers set off on their adventure armed with the invincible courage of youth, neither being able to imagine the fate which lies before them.

Look at the intricate work on the costumes! Amazing aren't they? Bring on more pics! You can see the earlier photo releases here and here.

MUST WATCH: WOW. New TINTIN Trailer Now Online! Check It!!

Stunning new (full length) trailer for TINTIN is now up and even though it is not in high definition yet, it amazes. Finally we get a better glimpse at what all the fuss has been about and it lives up to expectations! Mine at least - what do you think?

Certainly cut from the mold of a Spielberg adventure and weaving in the mainstay attributes of the classic Hergé comic series, TINTIN looks like a gorgeous creation.

Here's the storyline:
Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures Present a 3D Motion Capture Film THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish. Starring Jamie Bell (BILLY ELLIOT , DEFIANCE) as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig (QUANTUM OF SOLACE , DEFIANCE) as the nefarious Red Rackham.

So have a look! HD versions should be out soon...

The uncanny valley seems to be well under control here I believe. I want to see more of the facial movements, especially the mouths - but so far so good! Love it!!

Update From Middle-earth: Part 2 Of Peter Jackson's Set Videos!! Plus Another Dwarven Photo

First of all, have another look at some more dwarves from THE HOBBIT! Thursday we showed you Ori, Nori and Dori; this time around we have Oin (played by John Callen) and Gloin (Peter Hambleton).

These guys are distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, and the two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture.

Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

Man, I love these character photos! More, MORE!!

And now, the production video! I have to say, Peter Jackson gets it. This is what we are all craving and he is providing it! The need to fill the information gaps with info from spies drops considerably when you have the director himself take time for Middle-earth fans like this. Kudos Peter!!

I like seeing the additional work that Andy Serkis has taken on too. Obviously he is a talented and driven creative genius so for Jackson to help him achieve more is good on him.

Which brings me to Middle-earth. New Zealand. Gorgeous isn't it? I have to get down to Kiwi soon to see some of these locations first hand! Nice to have double tentpole budget to fly around 5 helicopters for location scouting isn't it? Well, they need it. And it will all pay off.

So have a look:

Keep up the great work Peter and company!
The whole world is waiting on your creations. No pressure though. Ok, yeah there is some pressure - but these videos are obviously good for you and your team to let off some steam. Looking forward to the next set video update from Middle-earth!!

MUST SEE: New CONAN THE BARBARIAN 3D Poster!

After seeing Jason Momoa in A GAME OF THRONES I can easily see why he was cast as Conan. I think he is a wonderful choice for the role. Did you know that he stands 6'4"? I had no idea. He doesn't come across that tall unless he is standing next to someone. That makes him the same height as Dwayne Johnson (and taller than Schwarzenegger). Hmmm, would like to see a movie with The Rock And Momoa cast against each other!

If you have a negative reaction to him as Conan as of now, I'd like to hear it actually! Let me know why. After seeing him as Khal Drogo (who he played MAGNIFICENTLY), I am going to love him as Conan.

The poster has elements from previous media photos and clips already seen, but has been put together in a very symmetrical and symbiotic way. Save for that sword hilt which I don't really like in it, everything else resonates. Quite like it!

It's all the rage to have floating embers and ash in the air for posters these days isn't it? HP7 is doing it too for example. Anyway, I am looking forward to the movie - they've sold me a long time ago. We can all use some more villainous Stephen Lang!!

Look for CONAN THE BARBARIAN on August 19.

EXCLUSIVE: Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS Setting Up RIGHT NOW In Iceland's Stony Desert Highlands! Security Set Up At Doom Valley

Hey guys! Just heard from one of my AWESOME readers in Iceland (Call him "M") and he's informed me of the location on Iceland that Ridley Scott will be shooting portions of PROMETHEUS! It will be their Stony Desert Highlands near Landmannalaugar (Landman Pools). You can check out the gorgeous mountains at Landmannalaugar right here. The second image in this post is of those mountains as well.

The top photo is actually of Iceland's Doom Valley (in winter) which is also near Landmannalaugar and where security is now stopping tourists from advancing any further to Landman Pools, closer to where they will be shooting. Thanks for the photo M!

I can't imagine a more remote and exotic location for shooting sci-fi. I have seen quite a few cool locations too, like Saddle Road on the Big Island of Hawaii. Let me tell you the most eerie feeling washes over you when you are in these locations because it is simply otherworldly. It's very unsettling. Beautiful, but eerie.

The roads even at this time of year can be rocky and icy so it will be tricky to get the crew of over 350 and of course the actors to and from the location. Ridley is not yet on the set according to the locals, but soon to arrive.

Scott and his team first visited back on April 29 to scout locations on the island via private jet, then helicopter flying to the southern regions. The next day they travelled north to Akureyri (largest city in the north) for further scouting.

The production will shoot for about 7 days in Iceland. True North Productions and the production manager Sam Breckman have been hard at work bringing this all to fruition. True North has been responsible for some truly awe inspiring locations on Iceland (DIE ANOTHER DAY, JOURNEY 3D, BATMAN BEGINS, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, TOMB RAIDER to name a few). PROMETHEUS is in great hands! Yes the last two shots are Iceland!! Looks alien to me. Great spot for PROMETHEUS.

Here's more information about the Highlands of Iceland:
The Highlands of Iceland cover most of the interior of Iceland. They are situated above 400–500 metres and are mostly an uninhabitable volcanic desert, because the water precipitating as rain or snow infiltrates so quickly into the ground that it is unavailable for plant growth, which results largely in a surface of grey, black or brown earth, lava and volcanic ashes. A few oasis-like areas, such as Herðubreiðarlindir near Askja, are found only in proximity to rivers.

Some of the most interesting parts of Iceland with volcanic activity are to be found in the Highlands, such as Landmannalaugar and the region around Askja and Herðubreið.

The Highlands can only be crossed during the Icelandic summer (June to August). For the rest of the year the highland roads are closed. The best known highland roads are Kaldidalur, Kjölur and Sprengisandur. Most highland roads require four wheel drive vehicles, because it is necessary to ford rivers. However, the Kjölur route can easily be traversed in an ordinary sedan and is therefore one of the more popular highland roads. Off-road driving ("road" in this context meaning tracks that are already present) is forbidden entirely in Iceland where there is no snow, including the Highlands, to protect the environment.

So can you tell I am on the edge of my seat for PROMETHEUS? Is it obvious? I think many of us are hahaa! Can't wait to see more... I'm on it!
